Tonka Cheer consists of two consecutive seasons: sideline (fall) and competition (winter). The program runs from May-mid February. The team practices three times per week throughout the season.
- Sideline cheerleading (fall) involves cheering at Skippers varsity football games, performing at pep fests and homecoming activities. Sideline cheerleading is a Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) registered activity which serves to boost school spirit, promote good sportsmanship and develop positive crowd involvement.
- Competition cheerleading (winter) involves MHS representation in local, regional and national cheerleading competitions. Involves travel (MN, regional and national) to camps and competitions, including the UCA Cheerleading Camp in Pennsylvania in August and the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Florida in February.
Tonka Cheer varsity cheerleaders must be enrolled in grades 8–12 in the fall and meet the MSHSL and Minnetonka School District Eligibility Requirements.
The Tonka Sparklers cheer team is an adaptive program that was introduced in the fall of 2011 and is sponsored by the MHS varsity cheerleading program. They cheer alongside our varsity cheer team at Skippers home football games and participate in local and state cheerleading competitions. The Sparklers program runs August through January. Practices are once per week.
