K-12 Computer Science & Maker Spaces

Inspired by Code.org, we have implemented a K-12 coding curriculum that introduces all students to the language of computer programming. In addition, Tonka Coders & Makers simultaneously offers and develops advanced level coursework for students aspiring to specialize in this area. This program is unique– one of the first of its kind in the state of Minnesota.

Computer programming skills have become essential to our students' success. This is not because they will all grow up to program computers, but because our students need to understand the science behind digital devices, which play such an important role in our modern world. Students need to create technology, not just consume it.

May 1 - May Day

We chose this day because May Day is a special holiday. It’s an ancient festival for it indicates the beginning of spring. It’s also a traditional holiday that is celebrated by many around the world on May 1st, and it is coming very soon as well. Another thing that May Day brought about is May Day baskets. May Day baskets first started out when there was a five-day festival in honor of the goddess Flora. People would make small baskets in her honor. Today people make them for friends and neighbors. Dances, singing, and cake are often part of the celebration. We chose this project because it symbolizes spring, which is almost here.

May 4 - Star Wars Day

We chose Star Wars Day because all three of us are really into Star Wars. We have watched all the movies, and to us, this day is very special. So many people put a lot of time and effort into making those movies. We wanted to celebrate that by making a Star Wars project.

May 4 - Star Wars Day

We chose May the Fourth for various different reasons. One of the reasons was that we were inspired by the new Star Wars movie and show as well as the past movies and we wanted to celebrate them. Another reason was that we all have all been impacted by Star Wars. Star Wars was a very famous Lucasfilm production and still is to this day. May 4th is a fun day to celebrate George Lucas and his best work. We think that Star Wars should be remembered well. May the force be with you!

May 13 - Leprechaun Day

We chose Leprechaun Day because we were interested in the topic. Leprechauns are little Irish men that turn things into gold! You have to be very lucky to find one! If you find a rainbow, and a pot of gold it is pro a leprechaun's gold!

May 16 - Love a Tree Day

We chose Love a Tree Day because trees are a very important part of nature and they take CO2 and turn it into oxygen. Trees bring color to our world. In some places they grow trees for food. Trees give us wood and give homes to animals. Everyone should love trees for what they give us. Go outside and love a tree today!
