On Thursday, June 8, the 70th graduating class of Minnetonka High School celebrated its commencement at US Bank Stadium. 

The program opened with “Pomp and Circumstance” as played by the MHS band and orchestra while just under 900 graduates entered the stadium, followed by a greeting from student emcees Saloni Somia and Macie Wenning. The band and orchestra then played the national anthem.

Superintendent David Law welcomed graduates and their families, congratulating the Class of 2023 graduates for embracing opportunities throughout their years at Minnetonka and for the new paths that they have forged. 

“Minnetonka doesn’t make it easy,” Superintendent Law shared in his address. “We have challenged you, at times, I am sure, but I believe, too, we have prepared you. We are eager to see what you will accomplish with your lives. Each of you has the unique opportunity to harness your unique strengths and channel them to make a mark on the world. I am proud of each and every one of you.”

Superintendent Law recognized students’ perseverance and the ways they have challenged themselves and others to do their best. “Whether you will head off to college, go into the military, go into an apprenticeship, to trade school, take a gap year or go straight into your career, be confident that your experience, your connections and your opportunities from your time in Minnetonka will give you strength, courage and knowledge to thrive,” said Superintendent Law.

The audience enjoyed a live musical performance from seniors Caleb Hunter, Wilson Lindberg, Max Perdu and Luke Rowen, who sang an a capella rendition of “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” by Green Day, arranged by Minnetonka High School choir director Aaron Kohrs.

The Class of 2023 then heard remarks from student speaker Jerry Zhang and student-chosen faculty speaker Matthew Breen. Zhang spoke about what it means to grow up, and how the Class of 2023 can use their childlike imaginations and growing adult resilience and empathy to make a difference in the world. Breen, a business department instructor who also teaches in the VANTAGE program, encouraged the Class of 2023 to “find their moments” to be kind and positive for those they encounter, especially those who are left out or lonely, in order to create a more connected and inclusive space wherever they go.

The symphony orchestra, wind ensemble and concert choir then joined together to perform “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius. 

Minnetonka High School Principal Jeff Erickson formally recommended the class for graduation. “Class of 2023, I am proud of you. There are thousands and thousands of people in this stadium who share the same feeling, and who have been cheering you on for years,” said Erickson. “I am in awe of each of you, what you’ve accomplished and what you’ve done.”
